In the midst of messaging apps getting infused with AI and what not, WhatsApp is not one to sit still. Yet somehow WhatsApp's current focus has still been on improving its group chats. With the latest update, WhatsApp makes it easier for Android users to invite member to a group using an external invite link.
The feature has appeared only for the beta version for the app, available to download after you have signed up for the Google Play Store Beta testing program. Group admins can now send an invite links through third-party apps to add new members to the group.
So far the feature was only available for modded APKs of the WhatsApp app and it only worked on rooted devices. But with the latest update, the messaging app is allowing anyone with the beta version to take advantage of the feature.
The feature will be extremely helpful to public messaging groups especially for businesses and communities, giving them the option to increase their reach. Now that WhatsApp has increased the maximum number of participants to 256 members, the feature is bound to come in handy for a lot of people.
After installing the new update, group admins will see an 'Invite to group via link' option. Admins also have the option of revoking the link, following which no more users can be added to the group using the link.
To create a public group invite, follow these steps:
1. Create a WhatsApp group and tap on the three-dots button on the top right corner and go to 'Group info'.
2. Among other options, you will see an 'add participants' option. Tap on it and your contact list will appear. Choose 'Invite to group via link' on top of the contact list.
3. Once clicked, you will see a new screen open with a unique link, which can be shared via WhatsApp or any other app. Just copy the link and share. You will also find the option of revoking the link here.
4. You can also generate a QR code or a NFC tag. You can save and distribute the QR code as a PDF or print it out on business cards and papers. Similarly, click on the 'Write NFC tag' option and you can create NFC tags that users can take advantage of with their NFC-enabled phones.
5. Once recipients click on the link or scan the QR code or connect via NFC, they will receive the popup confirming whether they want to join or cancel.
Just recently, WhatsApp increased the maximum number of members to 256 and allowing members to tag each other on chats as well quote their messages. Apart from improvements to its group chat, WhatsApp also unveiled the ability to create and send GIFs, a selfie flash in the built-in camera and the option to doodle on photos.
