Google has made a host of India-centric announcements today and these also include a lot of improvements to Chrome.
Centered around improving internet access and functionality to areas with poor data connectivity, Google has released a data saver mode for the Chrome app that promises to be able to compress MP4 videos using up to 67 per cent less data. The new Chrome app can figure out if you are on a 2G network and automatically streamline webpages that load twice as fast and save 90 per cent data.
Chrome also got its dedicated download option that makes the app useful even when you have no internet. You can download entire webpages, videos, music and images, accessible through a new download tab. But the best part is that the downloads can be paused and automatically resumed when connectivity is interrupted.
Apart from this, Chrome will incorporate machine learning to suggest websites based on what is locally popular and your interests. The content discovery recommends and downloads webpages that can later be accessed offline.
The Google Play Store too received similar data-saving treatment. Certain sections of the app will be pre-loaded on Wi-Fi so that you can browse the Play Store comfortably on slower networks. Google calls this feature 'fast browsing'. You also have the option of downloading apps only when you are on a Wi-Fi network.
The new Chrome features is set to arrive with version 54, set to launch sometime mid-October. The fast browsing feature on Google Play is rolling out to Indian users from today.
