Google's dream of connecting all parts of India is slowly inching closer to reality. Today, the search giant announced its launch of Google Station, Google's own high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots deployed to places highly frequented by people like malls and transit areas. Cafes and universities are covered under the program.
Google's high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots are already up and running in 53 railway stations in the country, including Mumbai CST. Google said over 3.5 million people use the Wi-Fi in stations with over 15,000 new users coming on board every day.
Google Station is an extension of the project Google started in partnership with RailTel and Indian Railways to provide high-speed internet at stations where millions of people could come online. With Google Station, the company is looking to expand the project to other parts of the country as well, providing data in places frequented by millions of people on a given day.
The Google Station hotspots can be monetized in different ways. Partners can charge either access fee or allow ads, or they can make it free. The company is looking for partners for the project right now.
Google also announced that it has improved hindi search, especially for voice, in noisy environments. The company says they have gained 45 per cent improvement in Hindi speech recognition.
Also, Google's smart-reply feature in its AI-powered Allo messaging app can provide smart-replies in a combination of Hindi and English, much the same Indians tend to converse with fellow natives these days.
Later this year, Google will release Google Assistant in Hindi, making it the first virtual assistant to be able to converse fluently in Hindi.
Going by these announcements, it is clear the India is quite close to Google's heart. Google promises to provide network connectivity and make its services more accessible to areas with poor internet and in this regard, Google also launched an updated Chrome app that promises to save 67 per cent data for Indian users.
