Even with a minimal number of devices running Android 7.0 Nougat, Google is already getting the next incremental update, Android 7.1 Nougat ready for final release.
In a blog post, Google announced the developer preview of Android 7.1 will be available for beta testing on Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Pixel C devices by the end of this month.
Vice president of Android Engineering, Dave Burke said Android 7.1 will be available as a developer preview, similar to how Android 7.0 was made available for testing.
The update comes with new features for app developers to build upon including a new app API that lets apps show up to five shortcuts in the launcher, without even opening, much like how Apple's 3D Touch works.
Apart from this, the night mode which had appeared and disappeared in previous developer previews will finally come to users; support for Daydream VR platform and images keyboard API that allows apps to enable custom stickers, animated GIFs and more.
The developer preview for Android 7.1 Nougat is available to those who have signed up for the Android Beta Program. While only the three latest Nexus phones will receive the preview, Google is gunning to release the final build for the full lineup of supported devices including Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Pixel C and supported Android One devices.
Once the final build for Nexus devices has been released, Google will push the consumer version to users soon. Google said it's working closely with phone manufacturers to speed up the roll-out of Android 7.1 Nougat.
Google's newly released phones Pixel and Pixel XL already run Android 7.1 out of the box and will be available in India from October 13, starting from Rs 57,000.
