Yesterday the iPhone 7 name was seemingly confirmed by Vodafone, and this morning the device is popping up in another unexpected location. A series of Apple certifications filed in Russia appear to confirm plans for the new smartphones, along with an upgraded Apple Watch lineup and a pair of wireless “AirPods” earbuds.
The iPhone leak simply refers to two devices with the model numbers “A1778 and A1784,” both running iOS 10 software. Russian site MobileTelefon notes that those numbers aren’t associated with any current iPhone. So it seems likely they refer to the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
Even more interesting is another Russian filing that refers to a new “AirPods” product. That’s the name usually associated with Apple’s rumored Bluetooth earbuds, which could potentially launch alongside the iPhone 7 to make up for the missing headphone jack. It’s unclear if the AirPods will be truly wireless or feature some sort of cord connecting the two buds. It’s also possible that Apple could wait a little longer before releasing the AirPods to fine-tune its new hardware.
Finally, Apple filed several documents for upcoming wearable devices. There are 10 new model numbers in total, grouped into three separate filings. That suggests Cupertino could stick with the same three names (Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition) when it launches the second-generation smartwatch.
