Google will reportedly drop the “Nexus” branding from future smartphones, making Marlin and Sailfish part of a new family of devices from the search giant. According to Android Central, Google is looking to shift to new branding that puts “Google” front and center, with the possibility of manufacturer logos gone altogether; that could mean Marlin and Sailfish, rumored to be built by HTC, won’t have the company’s name on the back. It’s unclear, however, what will replace the Nexus logo. In addition to a pivot away from the Nexus name, Google is also reportedly doubling down on the tweaks offered exclusively to its handsets. These features will be offered on top of the “vanilla” Android experience, proving once and for all that there’s really no such thing as pure Android anymore. Among the potential features, Google may introduce a new button layout, color scheme, and other features designed around its upcoming Google Assistant technology. Recently, we caught a glimpse of what this new button layout might look like, highlighting a much different design compared to what Nougat currently looks like.Beyond newly branded smartphones, it’s unclear if Google has plans to introduce any new tablets. With Android apps coming to Chrome OS later this year, Google may focus its attention on creating new phones and new laptops, though that’s just speculation on my part.
