Earlier this year Google revealed two new apps, Allo and Duo, meant to conquer texting and video calls respectively. Duo launched earlier this month, but we’re still waiting on Allo. Now it looks like the smart messaging app could finally be ready for primetime.
Google recently started promoting Allo in the Play Store. The app is showing up in the “New & Updated” section, though you still have to register to join the beta test. To be fair, Allo has been listed in Google Play since it was first announced, but you had to follow a specific URL to find it. This is the first time it’s getting any sort visible push.
Google previously said Allo would launch sometime this summer. So it’s possible the app could be released any day now. Then again, it’s possible this was simply a mistake. We still have a few weeks left to go before summer officially ends.
In case you missed the initial announcement or just forgot about it here’s a quick refresher on Allo. The upcoming app is a smart messaging service that takes advantage of Google Assistant, so you can call on the AI to help find a nearby restaurant or answer a question from inside a group chat. There’s also a special Incognito mode that encrypts your messages and promises to delete them after a set amount of time.
Allo is set to launch on both Android and iOS. We’ll keep an eye out in case the app really is right around the corner. So stay tuned.
