on schedule, an incremental update for Android Nougat has begun. Android 7.1.1 is currently rolling out for both the Pixel and Pixel XL as well as a bunch of Nexus devices. These include the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 9, Nexus 6, Nexus Player, Pixel C and a few Android One smartphones.
For Pixel owners, the update brings the most recent December security patches and will include raise-to-wake and double-tap to wake feature, which will let users see their lock screen and notifications when the phone is picked up or tapped with two fingers. We reported about this update last month as it had begun rolling to a few Pixel owners in Canada.
Nexus owners get a few features from the Pixel lineup including new range of updated emojis, GIF enabled keyboard for Google based apps like Hangouts and Allo, and app shortcuts on the homescreen.
The update is available OTA (over the air) and in case you haven’t got a notification, you can goto Settings, About phone, System updates and check for it. If you still don’t get it, hold up. It should hit your smartphone in a day or two.
We have managed to update a Nexus 6P to the latest versions. It asks to download the 1.27GB update file after which it is processed and installed. The smartphone booted up fairly fast and didn’t show the Android app update screen. We did however notice a notification saying Android system is being prepared along with a progress bar. The new update also brings in some new additions to the camera app including exposure compensation, white balancing and an option to enable a grid. Sadly, Nexus users will not be getting the new Google Assistant which is a huge disappointment and the new Pixel launcher is also not included in the update.
