BlackBerry’s last two devices, the DTEK 50 and DTEK 60 might have been rebadged versions of Alcatel devices, but the upcoming smartphone ‘Mercury’ will be made by BlackBerry themselves, and might also be the last piece of hardware it makes. The leaked images don’t tell us much about the device other than the fact that the BlackBerry Mercury will feature a physical QWERTY keyboard.
Two images were spotted on Chinese social media website, Weibo and show a phone with a slim side-bezel design, a prominent front camera and ambient light sensors. The phone will be running on Android. The yet-to-be-launched smartphone also appears to be sporting capacitive buttons placed between the screen and the keyboard.
BlackBerry Mercury was earlier spotted on benchmarking website, Geekbench back in October with the model number BlackBerry BBB100-1. The benchmark showed the phone to be running on a 2GHz Octa-core Qualcomm processor and featuring Android 7.0 Nougat OS. The phone comes with 3GB of RAM. The phone got 913 on the single-core score and 5046 on the multi-core score.
Mercury is said to be sporting a 4.5-inch Full HD display coming with an aspect ratio of 3:2. The phone will have a full physical QWERTY keyboard underneath the touch display and backed by a 3,400 mAh battery. The on board storage on the phone is expected to be 32GB, and featuring an 18MP primary camera along with an 8MP selfie shooter.
Back in November, BlackBerry CEO John Chen had confirmed that the company was working on an Android device with a physical keyboard – something that has been missing in both the DTEK devices that were launched recently with the BlackBerry name.
Blackberry had earlier in November launched DTEK 50 and DTEK 60 smartphones in India. DTEK 50 is the company’s thinnest device ever at just 7.4mm, and weighs in at 135gms. It features a 5.2-inch FHD display and is powered by an Octa-core Snapdragon 617 processor. The phone features 3GB RAM and 16GB of ROM (expandable to 2TB). On the camera front, the phone comes with a 13MP auto-focus rear shooter with PDAF and an 8MP front camera.
BlackBerry DTEK 60 comes with a 5.5-inch Quad HD display and is powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor. It features 4GB RAM and 32GB storage (expandable to 256GB). The phone is backed by a 3,000 mAh battery and features a 21MP rear PDAF camera, along with an 8MP front shooter.
