It's been less than a month since Tim Cook took the stage and unveiled the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus and now the rumour mill is already working overtime spilling the beans on the 2017 iPhone 8.
Highly reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI securities is forecasting the 2017 iPhone will have an all glass front and back and will come with a stainless steel metal frame for the higher variant.
According to the KGI report, Apple was really impressed with how much people loved the glossy Jet Black iPhone 7 and by implementing glass will make it less prone to scratches.
The report also suggests Apple will use the 2.5D glass which has been said to withstand shocks much better than 3D glass because of the curvature of the cut. A full glass iPhone is also easier to make as compared to the Jet Black glossy iPhone which has a 9-step anodization and polishing process.
Switching to glass makes sense in this case as the jet-black iPhone has proved the most popular with 30-35 per cent pre-orders asking for the glossy black variant. None of the Apple Stores except one in France has stock of the jet-black variant. Using glass delivers the same glossy finish but has a less tedious manufacturing process along with being much less scratch prone. We witnessed a similar story in London which is also without the new Jet Black colour.
Additionally, there is chatter which suggests that the high-end version will have a stainless steel frame instead of aluminium which is usually used. This would make the phone sturdier.
This would be a major throwback to the iPhone 4 design but with a difference in the use of metal to push the higher variant.
Using an all-glass design also means the bezel size will be reduced by a lot. That means we can see a 5.8-inch screen in the next iPhone after the 2016 iPhone 7 came out with 4.7 and 5.5-inches displays.
2017 will mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone that legendary Steve Jobs famously launched after making a comeback to Apple. And it is highly likely that the current CEO Tim Cook will leave no stone unturned to invoke even higher levels of innovation for the next iPhone.
