Google's tirades of putting India on the digital space is ambitious and commendable. After partnering up with RailTel to provide free Wi-Fi at railway stations in India, Google has set its eyes at partnering with the Indian government to integrate its UPI and Aadhar program to the Android ecosystem.
In an interview with Economic Times, Google's vice-president for Next Billion, Caesar Sengupta said the company is in talks with the Indian government as how the UPI and Aadhar programs can be opened up.
"We’re huge fans of the Indian stack (Aadhaar and UPI), it’s transforming,” Sengupta said.
UPI is Unified Payment Interface, a set of app APIs by the Reserve Bank of India to facilitate secure online transactions. Google is reportedly in talks with NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) to find solutions to support UPI that could potentially revolutionize how we make online payments.
With Aadhar and UPI integrated, Google thinks smartphones can become an extension of people's identity, allowing them to transact more securely.
Just earlier this month, it was reported the Indian government has met with smartphone makers and online facilitators like Google to make phones compatible with Aadhar. But the talks were inconclusive as the devices needed to be fitted with special hardware which would increase the prices.
Just yesterday, Google made a host of India-centric announcements including the expansion of its public Wi-Fi project, for which it is currently looking for partners. Like the RailTel deal, the partner would provide with the bandwidth, while Google would set up the public Wi-Fi hotspots. The free Wi-Fi service are currently functioning in 53 stations including Mumbai CST.
