Apple has roped in e-commerce giant Flipkart to sell the iPhone 7 and iPhoen 7 Plus online. The phone will launch in India on October 7, just in time for the festive season.
According to the deal, Flipkart will source the iPhones directly from Apple, unlike earlier when Flipkart and all other e-commerce sites had to rely on third party sellers to get Apple products, much like a marketplace model.
This deal will allow Flipkart to earn a higher margin on the sale of an iPhone, as compared to other e-commerce sites like Amazon, Snapdeal and the likes.
Flipkart now has a new page up on its site teasing the iPhone 7.
Apple also had a similar deal with online wholeseller Infibeam for some years. But Infibeam is more of a bulk seller, and with Flipkart, it is a first for Apple to tie up with a consumer facing online retailer.
The key difference between the two deals is that Flipkart will now be listed as an "Authorised Reseller for Internet or Catalogue sales" by Apple in India. That means Flipkart will sell all categories of Apple products including iPhones, iPads, Macs and iPods. Infibeam however can only sell iPhones and iPads.
The deal will give Flipkart a major boost in its fight against Amazon India as Flipkart will receive marketing support and stocks directly from Apple. Amazon and the rest of the competition will have to rely on third party resellers and it is expected the devices will be in short supply initially, giving Flipkart the upper hand in the festive season.
The partnership is a win for Apple as well. It will ensure Apple won't have to suffer the price erosion that happened with the previous iPhones because of deep discounting by the online retailers. The deal will mean that the iPhone 7 will only be sold at the price mandated by Apple.
The iPhone 7 will release in India on October 7. Prices for it start at Rs 60,000 for the 32GB variant of the iPhone 7, Rs 70,000 for the 64GB variant and Rs 80,000 for the 256GB variant. The iPhone 7 Plus will start from Rs 62,000 for the 64GB variant, Rs 72,000 for the 64GB variant and Rs 82,000 for the 256GB variant.
