The sliceyourlife team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Despite not being my primary home computer anymore, I still use my MacBook Pro as a home server, and for super high-intense projects. That's why my OWC Thunderbolt dock is so important. It lets me connect my computer to a ton of peripherals, and brings back ports like Fire Wire and Ethernet that Apple abandoned in the name of progress or thinness. Since Apple has gone to a USB-C sized connector with their new MacBook Pro, my dock isn't compatible anymore, but CalDigit's is. For the price of one Thunderbolt 3 port, you get three standard USB 3 ports, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, a DisplayPort 1.2 port, USB-C port, speaker out and a headphone out port. Not a bad trade. The Displayport caps out at 30 hz when outputting at 4K, but besides that no other ports are compromised. For what it's worth, I run my 4K display at a resolution of 2560 x 1600, which this hub can run at 60 hz. We live in a wireless world, but MacBook Pro owners (myself included) tend to have a lot of different peripherals and accessories running around. If you want to connect an external hard drive, external display, and have a wired internet connection, you'll need a dock like this. Better still, since the ports on the dock are standard, you won't have to worry about having to buy all new accessories. If you're picking up one of Apple's newly announced MacBook Pros, a hub is a worthwhile companion. I've used one for a year, and regardless of which computer I buy next, I'll have to have one.
