Robot can understand human language, detect facial expressions.
A humanoid robot displayed at the 2016 World Robot Conference in Beijing enthralled the visitors with its unique capabilities. The robot named Jia Jia can understand human language, detect facial expressions and can respond appropriately, reported Daily Mail.
Jia Jia was the center of attraction at the conference where advanced robots including underwater ‘bots, aerospace androids, and civil anti-riot robots were displayed.
“What kind of skills do you have?” a visitor asked Jia to test her abilities.
“I can talk with you. I can recognize faces. I can identify the gender and age of people standing in front of me, and I can detect your facial expressions,” she answered.
Developed by the researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China, Jia is programmed to recognize human and machine interaction, with autonomous position navigation and services based on cloud technology.
“There are a few challenges about her. Firstly, she has to receive not only language but also facial expressions. Like what she showed just now, she can observe your facial expression, and give a natural response, so that you can see her intelligence,” said Lu Dongcai, who is in charge of the Jiajia project.
Apart from Jia, the conference featured several other robots like a domestic cleaning robot, entertainment robot, education robot and a rehabilitation robot.
A robot played a badminton match with a staff and a group of NAO robots exhibited their football playing skills. Meanwhile, another machine developed by the Siasun Robot and Automation Corporation demonstrated the use of a medical instrument on a model of a human skeleton.
“Artificial intelligence has to go through three stages. The first stage is being made-by-humans. The second stage is copying humans, and the third one is replacing humans,” said Xia Jiantong, director, and CEO of Recon Group.
“Right now, we are in the stage of made-by-human. If we continue at this pace, we still have a long way to go before we reach the ultimate goal for artificial intelligence, which is that humans will be replaced or made by robots,” Jiantong added.
