Adobe Max 2016: Adobe’s next-gen photo editor is in the making and it’s called Project Nimbus

Adobe’s Photoshop and Lightroom offerings have been the go-to software suites for image and photo editing almost since the inception of digital photography. They’re powerful tools that give a professional all the flexibility he needs to create the image he desires. They are, however, complex tools that are out of reach for the average person.

With Adobe’s recently unveiled Project Nimbus, the company hopes to bridge that gap. Project Nimbus can best be described as a Lightroom-like tool that mates the accessibility of Adobe’s mobile offerings with the power of the desktop.

The project itself is still in beta and not open to the public, but it was demoed at the ongoing Adobe MAX conference. Adobe explains that the software works like Lightroom in that image editing is non-destructive. More importantly, Nimbus is a “cloud-native” app, which means that you can carry your work with you wherever you go. Adobe says the transition will be seamless.

The project also leverages machine-learning-based tools that will apparently do things like search your library with natural language, use richer tags, etc.

TechCrunch points out that Project Nimbus is already very similar to Adobe’s own Lightroom software, which makes Nimbus an odd fit in Adobe’s current lineup.

It’s still early days yet and all we’ve seen is a glimpse of the software so far. Come next year, we’re sure to have a better understanding of what the Project Nimbus is all about.
